Benchling provides cloud software for research and development in biotechnology, used by scientists to design experiments, record results and manage biological data. It was founded in 2012 by Sajith Wickramasekara and Ashu Singhal, who started from the observation that molecular biology research was still largely tracked in paper notebooks and spreadsheets while the underlying science had become highly data intensive.
The platform combines several tools that were historically separate products. A molecular biology suite handles DNA and protein sequence design, cloning and annotation. An electronic lab notebook records experimental procedures and results in a structured, searchable and auditable form. Registry and inventory modules track biological entities such as plasmids, cell lines and antibodies along with the physical samples that correspond to them, and workflow and request modules coordinate work between teams.
Because the data is structured rather than free text, results become queryable across projects, which supports analysis and regulatory documentation that would otherwise require manual reconstruction.
Customers include pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, agricultural and industrial biology firms, and academic research groups.
Roles cover software engineering, scientific domain expertise, product management, implementation and customer facing science roles, based mainly in San Francisco, Boston and other research hubs.
As a verified employer on RefOpen, Benchling employees can refer prospective candidates for open engineering, science and product roles.
Benchling operates in life sciences software, is headquartered in San Francisco, California, USA, employs around 501-1,000 people.
RefOpen connects job seekers with verified Benchling employees who can submit an internal referral for open roles. A referral pushes your application to the top of the recruiter's list and improves your odds of landing an interview.
