Epic Games is a video game and software company headquartered in Cary, North Carolina. It develops Fortnite, publishes and licenses the Unreal Engine, and operates the Epic Games Store.
Unreal Engine is the part of the business with reach well beyond games. It is a real-time 3D engine licensed to studios of every size, and it is now used heavily outside entertainment as well, in film and television virtual production, automotive design, architecture, simulation and training. That gives the company two quite different customer relationships: players on one side, and developers and enterprises building on the engine on the other.
Fortnite has evolved from a battle royale game into a platform in its own right, hosting creator-built experiences, concerts and events, with its own economy and creation tools. Epic also runs services that other developers can use independently of its engine, including cross-platform online services and the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. The company has been publicly and repeatedly involved in disputes over app store commission structures and platform rules, which has shaped its store strategy and its public positioning on developer economics.
