Newport News Shipbuilding is the largest shipbuilding company in the United States and a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. It was founded in 1886 by Collis Potter Huntington on the James River in Virginia, and has built a substantial share of the vessels in the United States Navy over its history.
It is the sole designer and builder of American nuclear powered aircraft carriers, and one of only two shipyards able to construct nuclear powered submarines. Carrier work includes new construction of the Gerald R. Ford class, and refuelling and complex overhaul, a multi year process in which a carrier is stripped down, refuelled and modernised at roughly the midpoint of its service life. Submarine work covers modules and assembly for the Virginia class attack submarines and the Columbia class ballistic missile submarines, shared with Electric Boat.
The scale of the site is unusual: it spans hundreds of acres with dry docks, a very large gantry crane and integrated design, fabrication and testing operations, because a nuclear carrier is assembled in place over many years rather than moved between facilities.
