About NHS (National Health Service)

The National Health Service (NHS) is the collective name commonly used for the publicly funded health services of the United Kingdom. Established in 1948, with the NHS launched on 5 July that year, these services were developed around access to healthcare according to clinical need rather than the ability to pay. The NHS is a public healthcare system, not a single private company. Its work includes prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and continuing care, supported by public funding and a wide range of clinical and non-clinical occupations.

Healthcare is organized separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. NHS Scotland and NHS Wales have their own structures, while Northern Ireland operates Health and Social Care services. NHS England provides national leadership within the English system and is distinct from the many organizations that deliver care. The familiar blue NHS mark and the nhs.uk information website are associated with the NHS in England. Local health organizations and the other national systems have their own identities and governance arrangements.

NHS services encompass general practice, hospital and specialist treatment, emergency and ambulance care, community healthcare, mental health support, maternity services, dentistry, pharmacy, eye care and vaccination. Care may be delivered in hospitals, clinics, local practices, community settings or patients' homes. Public information and digital services support access to care, appointment management, prescriptions and health records. Eligibility rules, service arrangements and charges for some services differ between the national systems.

There is no single employer or corporate headquarters covering all NHS staff. Employing organizations include acute and foundation trusts, ambulance trusts, community and mental health providers, national bodies and local primary care organizations. Their responsibilities, locations and vacancies are specific to the services they operate. Across the system, the NHS workforce is well above 10,000 people; that broad size category describes the overall system rather than a particular trust, hospital, practice or central administrative body.

NHS Health Careers describes more than 350 careers. Alongside doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and allied health professionals, teams include healthcare scientists, digital and informatics specialists, managers, administrative staff, estates teams and other support workers. Technical and operational roles contribute to the systems and facilities that enable patient care. Entry routes vary by occupation and include professional qualifications, apprenticeships, training and the use of transferable experience from other sectors.

Vacancies are advertised by individual employing organizations, including through NHS Jobs. Each advertisement sets out the role, location, eligibility criteria and application process, and vacancy-specific questions are directed to the employer. A general NHS work-history entry does not identify the exact trust or national body employing a person. On RefOpen, NHS staff who complete the relevant verification may refer prospective candidates into eligible roles where their own employing organization permits referrals. This directory listing does not itself verify any individual's employment or imply an NHS partnership with RefOpen.
