About Samsung

Samsung Electronics is a South Korean multinational electronics manufacturer headquartered in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, and the largest subsidiary of the Samsung Group. Founded in 1969, it is one of the world's largest technology companies by revenue and employs well over 250,000 people globally.

The company operates across three broad areas. Device Solutions covers semiconductors, where Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer of memory chips, producing DRAM and NAND flash, and also runs a contract foundry business fabricating logic chips for external customers. Device eXperience covers mobile and consumer products, including the Galaxy range of smartphones, tablets and wearables, televisions, home appliances and audio equipment. Samsung Display, a separate affiliate, supplies OLED and LCD panels used both internally and by other manufacturers, including direct competitors.

Samsung is unusual among consumer electronics firms in the degree to which it manufactures its own components. It produces the memory, display panels and, for many models, the application processors used in its own devices, giving it a vertically integrated supply chain that few rivals match. That position also makes it a critical supplier to the wider industry, since a large share of global memory and display capacity sits in its fabrication plants.

Research and development is distributed across a global network of centres. Samsung Research and Development Institute India is among the largest of these outside South Korea, with sites in Bangalore, Noida and Delhi working on areas including mobile software, camera and imaging systems, artificial intelligence, networks and semiconductor design. India is also a significant manufacturing and consumer market for the company, and Samsung operates one of the world's largest mobile phone manufacturing facilities in Noida.

The company invests heavily in advanced semiconductor process technology and next-generation memory, areas requiring sustained capital expenditure at a scale only a handful of firms can support, and it competes simultaneously as a supplier to and a rival of many of the largest technology companies.

The wider Samsung Group traces its origins to a trading company founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938, and today spans affiliates in shipbuilding, construction, insurance, biologics and advertising, though Samsung Electronics accounts for the majority of group revenue. Within the electronics business, Samsung SDI produces batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage, while Samsung SDS provides enterprise IT services and logistics software. The company has pioneered foldable smartphone designs and continues to push display formats that its own panel operations make possible. It is also expanding semiconductor manufacturing outside South Korea, including a large advanced logic fabrication facility in Taylor, Texas, supported by United States industrial policy incentives.
